Sustainability Council Winter 2011 Meeting

It is a force to be reckoned with when a group of dedicated representatives from all aspects of coffee—growers, certifiers, importers, social programs, roasters, and retailers—rendezvous to discuss how to move the dial on our industry’s sustainability meter. The winter ’11 Sustainability Council Retreat over the past weekend was a productive and fulfilling meeting of the minds. We deliberated the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Sustainability Award application and applicants, which was not an easy task, and how to maximize the value of the award for winners. Additionally, we developed a plan to market and launch the new Sustainability Tracking and Reporting Tool—a game-changing platform that will set a baseline for our industry’s carbon footprint and coffee stewardship from which we can initiate a plan for reduction and action. The sophisticated tool is designed to measure a company’s impact and track progress toward more sustainable business practices. There were equal parts brainstorming and doing—a nice balance of ideation and actualization—with an incredibly intelligent and conscientious group of people.
