Paul Thornton Joins Board of Directors for the Specialty Coffee Association of America

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 2, 2010 – Coffee Bean International, the Portland-based coffee roaster and wholesaler, announced today that its Roastmaster, Paul Thornton, has been re-elected to the Board of Directors for the Specialty Coffee Association of America(SCAA). The SCAA is the world’s largest coffee trade organization and serves the entire spectrum of the coffee industry, from growers and distributors, to roasters and baristas, to coffeehouses, with education, training, resources and businesses services. 

Thornton will serve for a second two-year term, working with fellow board members to meetthe challenges of a rapidly changing industry by setting and maintaining standards, expanding professional certification programs, conducting industry-specific research, and providing opportunities for SCAA members to connect, exchange, and work together to help the specialty coffee industry continue to thrive.

In addition to his role on the SCAA Board, Paul serves as Chairperson of  SCAA’s Statistics and Standards Committee and is one of the founding members of the SCAA Roasters Guild, where he served on the Executive Council from 2001 to 2008.

“I’m excited and honored to continue to serve the industry through this SCAA Board seat,” says Thornton. “Not only is it a recognition of Coffee Bean International’s positive impact on the industry, but it is also an opportunity to continue my work on programs to improve the production and the appreciation of high quality coffees, both at origin and here in the U.S.”

Thornton joined Coffee Bean International in 1982, learning the trade of artisan coffee roasting from his mentors and company founders Jeff Ferguson and Gary Talboy.  Over the last 28 years, Paul has helped Coffee Bean International emerge as one of the most well respected specialty roasters in the country, ensuring that high quality standards have been maintained as the company has evolved and grown.  

As Coffee Bean International’s Roastmaster, Paul is responsible for roasting and green coffee purchasing, including the company’s new direct trade coffee buying program, Project Direct. In addition, Paul oversees all product development and roaster training. He leads the company’s team of roasters who progress through a seven year Journeyman training program, which he established. Paul is a certified Q Grader, lectures and teaches at annual SCAA Conferences and participates in research and cuppings worldwide.
